Trauma Therapy in Virginia

You Don't Have to Keep Carrying What Happened Alone

Many of the clients I work with come to therapy feeling exhausted from carrying experiences that continue to affect their lives long after the event has ended.

Some find themselves replaying memories they wish they could forget. Others feel constantly on edge, overwhelmed by anxiety, emotionally numb, or disconnected from themselves and the people they care about. Some avoid reminders of what happened, while others struggle to understand why they react so strongly to situations that seem manageable to everyone else.

There is nothing wrong with you. These are often the effects of a nervous system that has been working hard to protect you.

What they often tell me after our first session is:

"I didn't realize how much energy I was spending just trying to get through the day."

"I thought something was wrong with me."

"For the first time, I felt understood instead of judged."

Many people come to therapy worried that healing means reliving every detail of what happened.

Trauma therapy is not about forcing yourself to relive painful experiences or forgetting what happened. It is about helping your mind and body process what you have been carrying so the past no longer feels like it is controlling the present.

I provide virtual trauma therapy for adults across Virginia who are struggling with the effects of PTSD, birth trauma, pregnancy and postpartum trauma, pregnancy and infant loss, childhood trauma, military and first responder experiences, medical trauma, and other overwhelming life events.

Using approaches such as EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), DBT skills, and mindfulness-based strategies, I help clients process difficult experiences, reconnect with their strengths, and move toward a life that feels more grounded, meaningful, and connected.

Trauma Can Affect More Than Memories

Many people think trauma only affects them when they think about what happened.

In reality, trauma often shows up in everyday life.

You may find yourself constantly scanning for danger, struggling to relax, overthinking decisions, avoiding certain places or situations, feeling emotionally disconnected, or reacting more intensely than you would like.

You may know logically that you are safe now, yet your body continues to respond as if the threat is still present.

Trauma can affect your relationships, parenting, self-confidence, sleep, work, and the way you view yourself and the world around you.

These reactions are not signs that something is wrong with you.

They are often signs that your nervous system has been working hard to protect you.

Trauma Looks Different for Everyone

Trauma is not defined by whether an experience would affect someone else the same way.

Trauma is about how an experience impacted you.

Trauma can develop from a single overwhelming event or from experiences that occur repeatedly over time.

Many of the clients I work with are navigating the effects of birth trauma, pregnancy and postpartum trauma, pregnancy and infant loss, infertility, childhood trauma, attachment wounds, medical trauma, military and first responder experiences, sexual assault, domestic violence, grief, and complex trauma.

Some experienced a single event that changed the way they see themselves or the world. Others have been carrying the impact of experiences that accumulated over time.

Some people can easily identify the experience that changed them. Others simply know that something still feels unresolved, even years later.

You do not need to compare your experience to someone else's in order to deserve support.

Whether your experience happened recently or long ago, healing is possible.

My Approach to Trauma Therapy

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to trauma healing.

Every person comes into therapy with a different story, different strengths, and different needs.

My goal is not to tell you how you should feel or how quickly you should heal. Instead, I work collaboratively with you to understand your experiences, build on your existing strengths, and help you move toward the life you want to create.

Healing is not about erasing the past. It is about helping you feel less controlled by it.

Rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach, I tailor therapy to your unique experiences, strengths, and goals. Together, we will identify what is getting in the way of the life you want to live and develop an approach that feels supportive, effective, and aligned with your needs, which may include:

EMDR Therapy

As a Certified EMDR Therapist, I use EMDR to help clients process traumatic experiences so they feel less emotionally overwhelming and disruptive in daily life.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Internal Family Systems (IFS) helps us understand the different parts of you that developed to survive difficult experiences and learn how to respond to those parts with greater compassion, curiosity, and understanding.

DBT Skills

Drawing from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), I help clients build practical skills for managing intense emotions, navigating relationships, tolerating distress, and creating meaningful change.

Mindfulness and Somatic Strategies

Because trauma affects both the mind and body, I also incorporate mindfulness and body-based strategies that help clients reconnect with a greater sense of safety, presence, and trust in themselves.

What is trauma therapy?

Trauma therapy helps people process and heal from experiences that continue to affect their emotions, relationships, sense of safety, and daily life. The goal is not to forget what happened, but to reduce the impact those experiences have on your present life.

How do I know if what I experienced was traumatic?

Trauma is not defined by whether an experience would affect someone else the same way. Trauma is about how an experience impacted you. If an experience continues to affect your emotions, relationships, sense of safety, or daily functioning, it may be worth exploring in therapy.

What types of trauma do you treat?

I work with a variety of traumatic experiences, including birth trauma, pregnancy and postpartum trauma, reproductive trauma and loss, childhood trauma, attachment wounds, sexual trauma, medical trauma, military and first responder experiences, grief, PTSD, and complex trauma.

Do you work with childhood trauma?

Yes. I work with adults who are navigating the lasting effects of childhood trauma, attachment wounds, emotional neglect, difficult family relationships, and other early life experiences that continue to affect their lives today.

Do you work with sexual trauma?

Yes. I provide trauma-informed therapy for adults who have experienced sexual assault, sexual abuse, unwanted sexual experiences, or other forms of sexual trauma. Therapy is always paced according to your needs, comfort level, and goals.

Do I have to talk about every detail of what happened?

No. Trauma therapy is not about forcing you to relive painful experiences or share details before you are ready. We will work together at a pace that feels safe and supportive for you.

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process and integrate distressing experiences so they feel less emotionally overwhelming in the present. As a Certified EMDR Therapist, I use EMDR to help clients heal from a variety of traumatic and distressing experiences.

Do you offer onlinne trauma therapy throughout Virginia?

Yes. I provide virtual trauma therapy to adults throughout Virginia, Maryland, Washington DC, & Michigan.

How do I get started?

The first step is scheduling a consultation. During the consultation, we can discuss your concerns, answer questions, and determine whether my services are a good fit for your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many people have questions about trauma therapy before getting started. Below are answers to some of the questions I am asked most often. If you do not see your question here, I would be happy to discuss it during a consultation.

Healing Does Not Mean Forgetting

Many people come to therapy wondering if healing is really possible after what they have experienced.

While we cannot change what happened, we can change how much power those experiences continue to have over your life.

Healing often looks like being able to think about the past without becoming overwhelmed by it.

It can look like feeling more connected to yourself, the people you care about, and the things that matter most to you.

Whether your trauma happened recently or years ago, you do not have to navigate the healing process alone.
